A recent survey found that a large portion of Americans do not know that a medication used to treat heartburn was purchased without a prescription, according to the U. S. Food and Drug Administration.
In the survey, the researchers reviewed data from more than 10,000 prescriptions for heartburn medication such as Nexium, Prilosec, Prilosec XR, and Prevacid among people aged 55 and older. They found that people who used these medications, especially those with a history of heartburn, had a slightly higher risk of dying from a heartburn related to prescription-only heartburn.
In their survey, researchers found that the most common medications used to treat heartburn were Prilosec and Prevacid, and that prescriptions for these medications increased by an average of 15.4 percent to 22.5 percent between the two groups.
